board of directors

Rick Schunter - chair

Rick has been a “life” member of Bethany serving in many different capacities over the years.  Under the old governance structure more recently he was part of the Executive Committee and part of the Management Committee prior to that.  Rick is married to Heidi and they have four children ranging in ages from 10 to 19.  He works as an accountant at Baptist Housing Ministries Society.

Leona Wiebe - Board Vice-chair

Leona has been serving as Vice-Chair on the Transitional Board, and as an Usher.  She has  previously served as Moderator and has facilitated a variety of learning and discussion groups including Practical Christian Living for new Christians and Alpha.  In the past, she has been on music and drama teams, and served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon. Outside of Bethany, she works as a Human Resources Consultant at VanCity Credit Union.

Michelle Veer - Board Secretary

Michelle Veer has been growing in relationship with Christ for almost 20 years now and has been attending Bethany for half of that time. She is currently serving as a youth leader and has been a part of the Management Board of Bethany for the last two years. Michelle is a wife to Terry and a mom to two beautiful kids. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, works part-time administrative and website work from home for a not-for-profit society, and volunteers her time at her children's school and at church.

Kim Boer

Kim is a wife, a mum of four, step-mom to four, and grandma of four! She grew up in a loving, but non-Christian, family. I began to attend Willingdon Church at 18, primarily for social reasons. Little by little the teaching sank in and she decided that she wanted a relationship with God. Life hasn’t always been what she expected or dreamed. There have been many challenges but knows God has sustained her through all of it.   For past 18 years she has worked for a residential renovation company, primarily responsible for all the bookkeeping and a myriad of other duties. Unofficially I am the den mother/counsellor for the staff!  She and her husband became members of Bethany in April 2015.

kami lau

I am Huei Leong’s wife.  Our son is Ian.

I grew up in Hong Kong. After high school, I studied and worked in Japan for 10 years before I moved to Canada. I didn’t have any religious beliefs.  All I believed was in myself.  As long as I was willing to put all my effort in it, I could get my results.  But after I moved to Canada, living in Richmond,  I felt my life was out of my control.

In 2008, I started to join Moms and Tots on Wednesdays at Bethany.  Then I met Donna who brought me into the Chinese fellowship. My husband Huei also joined me to come to church. We invited Jesus into our lives on Jan 27, 2011. And on Easter Sunday of 2011, we were both baptized at Bethany. God blessed us to join this big family.

It has been almost 10 years being a Christian and I continue to ask God to build me up and use me for His purpose.  When the church board nominated me to join them, I was unsure if it was right for me as I feel I might not be ready. I pray God will give me the confidence, courage and wisdom to take on this important role as a member of the board and a servant to our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ben kerby

I was born and raised in the city of Terrace in northern BC. I am the third of five brothers and was raised in a Christian home. As a teenager, although I continued to attend church and youth groups, I didn't have a personal commitment to Christ or honor God with my lifestyle. I always felt God drawing me to Himself, however. I dedicated my life to Jesus at the NAB triennial in Edmonton and was baptised not long after that.

My wife Liza and I started dating in high school. She stuck with me through some difficult times in university and we were married after we finished. God has blessed us with 4 children who are now 5, 7, 9, and 11 years old. I currently work as a software engineer and my wife is a part time high school teacher.

We moved near Bethany in 2012 and it gradually became our home church. We have been members for a few years and currently help with the preschool part of the children's ministry. I also coordinate indoor soccer at the church on Tuesday nights. I believe that Bethany is positioned to reach a lot of people given the rapid growth of Hamilton and the Lower Mainland as a whole and am excited to see what God has in store.

Lori Hiller

Lori grew up attending Bethany.  She was baptized and became a member at the age of 12.  She has previously served as a Sunday School teacher, been part of the choir, and currently serves on the Missions Committee and as a Greeter for Front Line Ministries.  Lori worked in Cameroon for 8 years as an NAB missionary.  She now teaches nursing at BCIT.

jesse bromley

Jesse Bromley has considered himself a Christian his whole life, and Bethany has played a large role in his growth, both spiritually and personally. He has grown up through Bethany’s children’s and youth ministries and currently volunteers as a leader in both ministries, as well as serving as one of Bethany’s sound technicians. He worked in the Bethany Child Care Centre for five years and later as the summer youth intern under Pastor Kelly for two years. Jesse is a university student having completed degrees in Biblical Studies and in Youth Ministry from Pacific Life Bible College, and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology from Simon Fraser University. He is currently working towards his Bachelor of Education in pursuit of becoming a primary-grade elementary school teacher.

Dr. Stefano piva - lead pastor (non voting)

Stef has received his Doctor of Ministry in preaching from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. He has a heart for missions and has taught overseas in Cameroon on six occasions and two times in Brazil. Stef & Nancy have three children: Josiah, Micah & Faith.

christine pfortmueller - executive director (non voting)

Christine has attended Bethany for her entire life – all 50 years!  She has served at Bethany in many capacities: in Children’s Ministries as a volunteer and then as Co-Director; as Church Treasurer as a volunteer and then as staff; and as Coordinator of all things rental and finance related. She has four kids (Mitchell, Connor, Emily and Ryan) and has recently added a new daughter-in-law to the family (Jasmin – married to Mitchell). In her spare time (do we really have spare time these days?) she enjoys reading and relaxing with her family and her three cats. As a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), Christine loves numbers and administration and organization; despite the fact that many other people think these things are boring. Spreadsheets are fun!
